What is Mediation?

Mediation is a private, voluntary process where people who are in conflict or have a problem, come together, sit down with a mediator and talk about ways to resolve the dispute.

What is a Mediator?

A mediator is an experienced, neutral person who is specially trained to help people find solutions that are agreeable to everyone involved.

What will the Mediator do?
  • Give people time to tell their side of the problem while the mediator listens.
  • The mediator will ask questions of the people to help everyone understand and clarify what brought them to the dispute, how people have been impacted and find out what is needed to move forward.
  • The mediator will help the parties find their own shared solution to their dispute.
  • The mediator will not take sides or blame either person.

What Mediation Is Not
  • It is not counseling
  • It is not a process to decide who is “right” or “wrong”
  • It is not a court hearing where testimony and evidence is presented.
